Summer A day Santorini
Summer A day Santorini
Santorini is a volcanic island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland. It is the largest of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of about 73 km2 (28 sq mi). Santorini is a popular tourist destination, with an international airport serving the island. The Municipality of Santorini comprises the island of Santorini and its surrounding islets.
The principal town of the island and seat of the municipality is Fira. The capital is a busy port, with ferries and cruise ships arriving regularly. Tourism is the main industry, and the population of the island peaks at around 15,000 during the summer months.
Santorini is believed to have been formed about 3,500 years ago by a series of volcanic eruptions on the seafloor, which eventually led to the collapse of the entire volcanic edifice. The eruption created a caldera that reached a depth of about 1 km (0.6 mi). The volcano is still active, and the last major eruption occurred in 1950.
